RICHARD WHITNEY MEMORIAL RACE
Dick Whitney was a charter member of the Ski Roundtop Racing Club in 1964. After racing as a junior through high school he continued his ski racing career in college at Plymouth State College in Plymouth, NH. After graduation from college in 1971 he moved to Incline Village, NV where he became ski school director at Ski Incline (now called Diamond Peak). He was also director of racing at Alpine Meadows, CA and raced on the Sierra/Tahoe pro skiing circuit. Dick was active in the PSIA and was an examiner in the Far West division. After several years in the Lake Tahoe area he returned to the East as ski school director at Ski Liberty. His responsibilities at Ski Liberty included the ski school and those of the assistant general manager. "Whitney's Run" at Ski Liberty is named in his honor. Dick then moved to Ski Roundtop where he was the general manager. While at Ski Roundtop his two children were members of the Ski Roundtop Racing Club and he was an active supporter of ski racing programs.
Dick then left the ski industry for a few years for a career in the investment business. Being as dedicated to skiing as he was he returned to the ski industry as general manager of King Ridge Ski Area in New London, NH. More recently Dick had returned to this area to work with his brother and sister-in-law at Mountainside Ski & Sports.
A brain tumor claimed Dick's life on March 1, 1998 at age 48.
The Ski Roundtop Racing Club (SRRC) hosts an annual Slalom Race in memory of Richard Whitney. This USSA sanctioned race is a Pennsylvania Alpine Racing Association (PARA) Central Region Qualifier for Junior racers, ages 8 and above. USSA Senior and Masters racers are also invited to participate.
